Aquarium Tour

Third and fourth-grade students at Barnardsville Elementary School took a tour “Under the Sea” and went back in time all during a recent field trip.

The students toured the Aquarium & Shark Lab by Team ECCO and Henderson County Heritage Museum, located in Downtown Hendersonville. According to third-grade teacher Whitney Hamlin, her student's most recent Wit and Wisdom lesson focused on what scientists study under the sea. Students learned about giant squids and sharks. And they got to see a live fish feeding at the aquarium.

“Allowing the students the opportunity to see what they have been studying up close and personal helps them to cement their learning and understand that what we study in class is real life and has a purpose,” said Ms. Hamlin.

“The students learned about fish characteristics (i.e., what makes a fish a fish?) and reptile characteristics,” said fourth-grade teacher Lynn Poletti. “They were able to do a scavenger hunt to identify different species of sea life. They got to pet reptiles, including geckos and tortoises!”

Meanwhile, fourth graders have been learning about the Revolutionary War. The visit to the Heritage Museum helped bring history to life for these young learners as they saw artifacts from several wars, and it allowed the third graders to preview the lesson that they’ll experience next year.

“The Heritage Museum allowed students to see artifacts from various wars and time periods in history,” said fourth-grade teacher Brittnay Murray. “The exhibits and staff at the Museum told stories to the students about our nation, community, and culture.”

Wit and Wisdom is a new curriculum that helps students become better readers, writers, thinkers, and leaders and incorporates lessons about everything from history to geography.
