PEP students work on the memory rock.

Progressive Education Program (PEP) found a beautiful way to honor a student who passed away over the summer.

Rylee Dantone, 10, will be remembered by her teachers and classmates with a “memory rock” in the school’s garden. Teacher Jacob Pace poured cement into a mold, and PEP students placed shapes of faux glass inside it, along with Rylee’s name.

“This keeps her memory alive and allows my students to communicate their feelings,” Mr. Pace said. “It gives them a sense of closure and makes her a permanent part of our memorial. It also means a lot to the staff who taught Rylee. We’ll always remember her.”

PEP provides a nurturing and safe environment that promotes a positive learning experience and fosters self-esteem for students. PEP staff members value their students as individuals with unique physical, social, emotional, and intellectual needs who are treated with dignity and respect.
