After 30 years in the classroom, one familiar face at A.C. Reynolds Middle School is preparing to turn the page on a remarkable chapter.
Eighth grade social studies teacher Robert Gouge is getting ready to close his grade book for the final time as he heads into retirement. Known for his steady presence, sense of humor, deep knowledge of history, and genuine care for his students, Mr. Gouge leaves behind a legacy that reaches far beyond lesson plans.
For decades, his classroom has been a place where students not only learn about the world around them, but also feel seen, supported, and encouraged to think critically. As he reflects on his time at Reynolds Middle, Mr. Gouge says it’s the people who made it all meaningful.
“The students, and this community are what I’ll miss the most,” Mr. Gouge said. “Coming to school every day and getting to work with kids as they grow and figure out who they are has been an incredible privilege.”
Colleagues say his impact has been felt just as strongly among the staff. Eighth grade math teacher Courtney Jones describes Mr. Gouge as a constant and dependable presence.
“Mr. Gouge has been such an important part of our eighth grade team,” she said. “Since I started working here, we have become such good friends. I will miss his daily pranks and jokes.”
Students echo that sentiment, sharing stories of how Mr. Gouge made learning feel approachable and meaningful. Eighth grader Reilly says his influence will stay with her long after middle school.
“Mr. Gouge is my favorite teacher,” she expressed. “He has helped me more than he will ever know, and I’m really going to miss him.”
As Mr. Gouge begins this next chapter, the Reynolds community is celebrating a career defined by service, compassion, and lasting impact. While he will be deeply missed, students and staff alike are wishing him the very best in a well-earned retirement.
