Superintendent's Comments
Good evening Parents, Members of the Community, Board Members, and Teammates,
Welcome to 2026! With the arrival of a new calendar year and with the anticipation of the start of a new semester, I am incredibly proud of the student and staff success we have already witnessed this year. Certainly there remain numerous challenges and tasks to be accomplished, but the absolute focus on supporting our students and staff, that I witness daily in our schools, in this building, and on this Board make me confident that we will continue to witness tremendous student success.
This evening, I would like to especially highlight Mr. Jeremy Stowe and the Transportation Department. From being on the roadways across our very large and geographically diverse county by 4am when inclement winter weather arrives, to their continual monitoring of conditions throughout, I would like to commend our team for their leadership, particularly in the unique set of challenges that weather in the mountains and valleys brings. I would also like to thank the Maintenance Department team, the Child Nutrition Department team, our school custodians, school leaders, and staff who are amazing in their collective response to inclement winter weather. Finally, thank you to our parents and families for their flexibility and patience when winter weather arrives as we seek to make the best decision possible to safeguard our students and staff.
Earlier this month, we recognized National Law Enforcement Day. I would like to take a moment to share my appreciation for our School Resource Officers, for our municipal police departments, for Sheriff Miller and the Sheriff's Department, and for all of our law enforcement partners. We are grateful for all they do to build relationships with our students and to keep us all safe.
This evening we will hear from our Auditors. We do not take for granted the professionalism of our Finance Department, our school bookkeepers, and the administrators who oversee our budget. The annual independent audit allows our Board of Education, our Commissioners, and most importantly, our county’s citizens, to know that Buncombe County Schools is an excellent steward of the funds entrusted to it.
Finally, this is School Board Appreciation month. I want to personally thank each of our Board Members for their service and dedication. Thank you for your leadership and for modeling what it is to put students first in all we do.
We remain committed to loving and supporting each and every single student in our school system. To our team and to our Board Members, Thank you for all that you do for the students, families, teachers, and staff of Buncombe County Schools.
Mister Chair, this concludes my comments.
