📚🚍💛 Each October, the Buncombe County Schools Bookmobile hits the road for a special weeklong tour of first grade classrooms across the district.

The visits connect directly to a Wit & Wisdom literacy module about how mobile libraries around the world bring books to eager readers- by ship, camel, or wheelbarrow. This year, first grade classes stepped onto the former yellow school bus and discovered that our own BCS Bookmobile is part of that same global story, serving local communities year-round.

“It’s wonderful to see first graders realize that the same kind of bookmobile they’re reading about in class visits their own school,” said Bookmobile coordinator Pricilla Lunsford. “It helps them see how stories connect our whole world.”

She and Bookmobile assistant Pamela Hart drive out from BCS Central Services throughout the school year to foster a love of reading in Pre-K students. They also keep literacy alive all summer long by visiting neighborhoods, community centers, and camps.

“We want every child to feel excited about reading and to know that books will always be within reach, no matter where they are,” Hart said.

This year’s first grade tour schedule included stops at elementary schools all around Buncombe County, each one another chapter in a story of curiosity, connection, and community.
