Second graders from Black Mountain Primary (BMP) dove into an unforgettable learning experience at the YMCA in Black Mountain - focused not on laps in the pool or cannonballs, but on lifesaving skills.

Through hands-on instruction and guided practice, students learned essential water safety skills to help them stay safe this summer around pools, lakes and rivers. From floating and treading water to safely entering and exiting the pool, the young learners gained confidence in and around the water while understanding the importance of staying calm and aware.

BMP Principal Kelly Owen said this annual partnership with the YMCA makes a big impact.

“Water safety is a critical life skill, especially in our mountain community where swimming holes are popular in the summertime,” she said. “I hope that this opportunity can help our warponies stay safe, and it can potentially save lives. We’re incredibly thankful for the YMCA team and the emphasis they place on helping our kids to be safe around water.”

With smiling faces, splashing feet, and newly acquired safety strategies, these warponies left the Y a little more confident.
