Charles D. Owen Middle School seventh graders conquered their fears and strengthened their Warhorse spirit during a trip to the YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly on Oct. 12.

After splitting into three groups, students tackled a ropes course, archery, and team building exercises while enjoying the forested campus near Black Mountain on a beautiful fall day.

“We took the students to the ropes course to foster social connection and collaboration, essential components of our teaching philosophy,” said seventh grade math and social studies teacher James Sapp. “This activity allowed students to step outside of their comfort zones and work together with peers from different backgrounds. Ultimately, students left with more of a connection to our school and community because of all the intentional activities the Blue Ridge Assembly provides.”

Between group activities, seventh graders Haley and Ella talked about how much fun they were having.

“I think my favorite thing was the ropes course,” Ella said. “It was really engaging, and I liked climbing and doing the zip line.”

“I also liked watching the boys be chickens,” Haley added with a laugh.

Even if a student didn't climb to the very top of the ropes course, all took some sort of risk throughout the day, Mr. Sapp said.

“Watching the students participate in these activities just reminds me why I choose to teach middle school,” he said. “The students were so brave, kind and caring with each other while they were trying something new. I think that was awesome to see as a teacher.”
