On Friday, April 21, Koontz Intermediate celebrated Spanish Language Day. The dual-language program, Conexiones classes, multilingual classes, chorus, and band at Koontz put on several performances in front of the entire school to celebrate the day, called el Día del Idioma Español. The students performed skits from the great Spanish novel Don Quixote and the Legend of Saint George, presented reasons to learn Spanish, and sang and played songs from Mexico and Colombia. In between performances, there was an outside celebration with more music, dancing, and even Zumba.

“For the students presenting, it's an opportunity to learn more about the language they speak and teach their peers about it,” said fifth grade teacher Robert Harms. “For the students watching, it's a chance to learn about Spanish Language Day, and how and why it's celebrated. The performances are tremendous representations of the beauty and power of the Spanish language.”

Conexiones is an extension of the Dual Language offerings at Glen Arden and Avery’s Creek Elementary. Dual Language is a form of bilingual education in which students are taught literacy and content in English and Spanish languages.
