Community High School Advance Planning Study

(Read the full study HERE.)

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY (excerpt from above study)

EXISTING FACILITY
The existing facility poses significant challenges to bring up to building code and achieve compliance with the accessibility code. However, the existing gymnasium is in good condition. In addition, the building on the site has been a proud fixture of the Swannanoa community since 1926.

The existing 8.97-acre site is relatively at and offers potential for expansion, renovation or new construction.

PRELIMINARY DESIGN APPROACH FOR OPTION 1
This approach aims to preserve the gymnasium and front facade of the existing building and construct a new two-story classroom building and cafeteria and kitchen located behind the original facade. A new “front porch” will connect the existing building to the new addition. The project will involve phased construction.

New construction aims to be efficient and cost effective by taking cues from industrial metal buildings. The new building will be located east of the existing building. Patterning and color selections add variation and a pleasing aesthetic.

The probable construction cost for Option 1 is $7.9 million dollars.

PRELIMINARY DESIGN APPROACH FOR OPTION 2
This approach takes advantage of the existing relatively at site on the existing property, north of the existing school. An entirely new facility would be constructed.

Like Option 1, new construction aims to be efficient and cost effective by taking cues from industrial metal buildings. Patterning and color selections add variation and a pleasing aesthetic.

The probable construction cost for Option 2 is $8.9 million dollars.
