Buncombe County Schools Associate Superintendent Susanne Swanger announces she will retire from BCS effective August 1, 2022. Superintendent Dr. Tony Baldwin will retire from BCS effective November 1, 2022.
“Our decisions were reached with a significant amount of thought and consideration,” said Dr. Baldwin. “With the challenge of the recent school year coming to an end, we believe the future ahead for our school district remains positive and encouraging. Despite the turbulence and patterns of change we faced throughout the COVID pandemic, we are proud that a successful model of educational support was provided for our students. While continued recovery remains, our school district maintains a reputation of excellence for best practice and innovation. Together school and district leadership will thrive by prioritizing the social-emotional and academic needs of all students through an equity lens.”
Dr. Tony Baldwin has served as Superintendent of Buncombe County Schools since 2009. A graduate of T.C. Roberson High School, Dr. Baldwin has spent his career as an educator in Buncombe County. As Superintendent, Dr. Baldwin is dedicated to several major initiatives that will drive student success in BCS. His priorities for advancement are within the areas of school safety, instructional technology, STEM, graduation initiative, and global education.
“Words can't truly express our gratitude and appreciation for allowing us the opportunity to serve you in district leadership roles over the past years,” said Ms. Swanger and Dr. Baldwin. “We both have been extremely blessed to have been surrounded by the quality of professional and personal support represented in our BCS family!”
Ms. Swanger has been an educator for 36 years with 32 years spent in Buncombe County Schools. She’s served as an elementary teacher and principal, Federal Programs Director, and Assistant Superintendent. She’s served as Associate Superintendent since 2009.
“The field of curriculum and instruction is my greatest passion,” said Ms. Swanger. “I am most proud of how well our team of world class educators establishes high-quality learning environments for students. Our staff provides positive experiences and access to powerful curriculum and instruction practices to support student success.”
Transition planning is underway, and BCS will keep stakeholders informed throughout this process.

El Dr. Tony Baldwin se ha desempeñado como Superintendente de las Escuelas del Condado de Buncombe desde el 2009. Graduado de T.C. Roberson High School, el Dr. Baldwin ha pasado su carrera como educador en el condado de Buncombe. Como Superintendente, el Dr. Baldwin se ha dedicado a varias iniciativas importantes que impulsarán el éxito de los estudiantes en BCS.
