A man carries a girl on his back as a group of kids and adults walk down a trail.

Buncombe County Schools Virtual Academy K-6 students and family members joined school staff for a fun, educational hike at the Blue Ridge Parkway Visitor Center last month.

After learning about the National Park Service’s mission to protect natural and cultural resources, the group headed out on a loop trail, where they investigated the plants and animals that call the Blue Ridge Parkway home. They had many moments of discovery, from finding holes left by boring beetles in logs to identifying trees by their leaves.

Though Virtual Academy is best known as Buncombe County Schools’ virtual option, this outing is an example of the many opportunities students have to learn and explore together with their classmates.
