Students and families at Johnston Elementary School came together for an engaging evening of hands-on learning during STEAM Night on March 31.

Organized with support from community partners and presented by Duke Energy, the event invited families to explore science, technology, engineering, art, and math through interactive activities, games, and creative projects- including a collaborative music wall and a live animal presentation. The Performing Arts Club closed out the exciting evening with a show on the school’s new outdoor stage,

“STEAM Night is all about giving students the opportunity to explore, create, and think critically in ways that connect to the real world,” said first grade teacher Heather Mullican. “It’s inspiring to see our students so engaged and excited about learning.”

Mullican thanked community partners Duke Energy, WNC Nature Center, N.C. Forest Service, Zaniac, the N.C. Arboretum, Read2Succeed, Standard Pizza Co., and Every Kid Outdoors. These businesses and nonprofits played a vital role by volunteering their time and services, supporting STEAM education, and building meaningful relationships with Johnston Elementary families.

“Events like STEAM Night showcase how hands-on, collaborative learning experiences help students grow academically while fostering creativity, confidence, and a love of learning,” she said.
