North Buncombe High School honored former standout athlete Karlyn Pickens on Friday by naming its softball field in her honor, recognizing her accomplishments at the high school, collegiate and international levels.
The dedication ceremony took place Jan. 16 during a North Buncombe High School basketball game and was attended by Pickens’ family, friends, former coaches, teammates and members of the North Buncombe community.

Pickens, a North Buncombe graduate, has established herself as one of the nation’s top collegiate softball players. She currently pitches for the University of Tennessee, where she has earned multiple national honors and helped lead the Lady Volunteers to success in the Southeastern Conference and postseason play.
In addition to her collegiate career, Pickens competes with Team USA, representing her country on the international stage. She is known nationally for her powerful pitching, including setting NCAA records for pitch velocity, and has been recognized as one of the top pitchers in college softball.

“This is such a special honor for me,” Pickens said during the ceremony. “I’m thankful for this close-knit community that has supported me, been there for me and shaped me into who I am and the journey that I’ve been on. Thank you all.”
School leaders said naming the field after Pickens reflects both her athletic achievements and the example she sets for current and future student-athletes.

The newly named Karlyn Pickens Softball Field will serve as a lasting reminder of her roots at North Buncombe High School and her continued impact on the sport of softball.
