In just a few days, North Buncombe High School bus driver Donald Roberts will turn in his key for the last time - but what a ride he’s had. After serving generations of the students, he is retiring from a position he’s held at the school for 37 years.
“These kids, these teachers, they’re my family,” Mr. Roberts said. “I’ve enjoyed being around them every day.”
His school family staged a special surprise retirement celebration last week to commemorate his remarkable career. The event included his blood relatives as well, who emerged from their hiding place behind a bookshelf and showered him with hugs.
“Without buses, school doesn’t happen for many families,” said BCS Assistant Superintendent Chip Cody. “Mr. Roberts, you made school happen for so many, and contributed so much to this school community.”
Mr. Roberts, who is a Carolina Panthers fan, received special surprises from the North Buncombe faculty and staff - tickets to the upcoming Panthers-Tampa Bay game later this month, and a custom jersey with his name and the number 37 - marking his years of service to the school.
“We are so thankful for the commitment Mr. Roberts has contributed to this school community,” said BCS Transportation Director Jeremy Stowe. “He truly is family to staff and students, and we are all truly blessed to have had so much time with him at this school.”
Thank you, Mr. Roberts, for 37 years of outstanding service to Buncombe County Schools and North Buncombe High School.
