Students kayaking down the French Broad River.

This summer portions of the French Broad River are cleaner thanks to a group of high school students and a local organization.

A.C. Reynolds High School Engineering Club saw firsthand a significant need in the community surrounding the French Broad River. The group decided at that point it was time to do something, and began their partnership with Asheville Greenworks.

“The engineering students spent four months collecting research about the French Broad River,” said Project Lead the Way Engineering teacher Claude Charron. “The students wanted to make a difference far beyond the walls of the high school.”

Students conducted research and community clean-ups in the area with guidance from Asheville Greenworks. Mr. Charron says this has been a great way to expose students to engineering.

“Having students go through the process of defining a problem followed by solving that problem is what engineering is all about,” he said. “This entire experience has been great, we will continue to work with Asheville Greenworks for the next two to three years.”
