A group of TC Roberson High students got the opportunity to go on a cultural trip to experience new foods, culture, and history on November 17th.

Students in Qing Gan’s Chinese class ventured to Atlanta to experience the Great Wall Asian Supermarket. It was also a perfect opportunity for students to practice their language skills.

“As a part of Chinese culture, food is one of the most important topics we discuss,” she said. “Students gained confidence through this experience as they applied what we are learning to real-life situations.”

This unique trip also allowed students the opportunity to cook their own Chinese lunch, compete in a scavenger-hunt, and shop at the supermarket.

“Seeing my students smiling and laughing was a true highlight for me,” Ms. Gan said. “They were inspired by the cultural activities and the variety of items they saw in the store. Over the Thanksgiving break some families went to the places we visited to try everything.”

For sophomore Angelina Czech Rodrigues and freshman Cara McDuffie, this trip was memorable. They said, “our favorite part of the field trip was to explore the Chinese supermarket, there was so much cool oriental merchandise, which we couldn’t find in our area.”

As for why students should experience a foreign language, senior Jolette Hernandez Ramirez said it’s about experiences.

“I decided to take Chinese so I could learn about the culture and traditions,” Jolette said. “It’s nice for people to get out of their comfort zone in order to learn something new.”
