At the Progressive Education Program (PEP), every day is filled with purpose, compassion, and dedication - and at the center of it all is Principal Dr. Thea Wilson. For the past two years, Dr. Wilson has led PEP with unwavering love for her students, staff and community.

Before joining Buncombe County Schools, Dr. Wilson devoted much of career to the North Carolina School of the Deaf, where she developed a deep commitment to meeting each student’s needs. That same passion continues to shine through at PEP, where she fosters an inclusive and encouraging environment for every learner.

“I love what I do because I get to witness growth every single day - from our students, our teachers, and our families,” said Dr. Wilson. “PEP is more than a school, it’s a community that celebrates every success, no matter how big or small. I am honored to serve such an incredible group of people.”

Assistant Principal Dr. Wendy Hannah said Dr. Wilson’s leadership has brought a renewed sense of connection and inspiration to the PEP family.

“Dr. Wilson encourages staff to collaborate and professionally reflect, focusing on the shared goal of supporting students and fostering a positive school culture,” she explained. “She regularly emphasizes the importance of communication, teamwork, and aligning our practices with the broader goals and vision of Buncombe County Schools.”

This National School Principals Month, Buncombe County Schools (BCS) proudly celebrates Dr. Wilson for her commitment to excellence, inclusion, and love - qualities that make PEP not just a school, but a family.

We are so thankful for all 45 principals across BCS, and their dedication to students, staff, families, and communities. Together they help lead the climb to success for all throughout our district.
