Greetings from Haw Creek’s School Counselor!  I joined the Haw Creek staff in October 2012 and am thrilled to be a part of such a strong team of professional educators.  I have more than 15 years of experience in education and have worked at the high school and middle school as well as elementary school levels in urban, rural, and military settings.  In 2008 I earned my National Board Certification.

My philosophy is that school counselors are here to help students learn the most possible from their school experiences and from life.  I am a resource to teachers, parents, students and community members.  I teach Life Skills lessons to all grade levels based on North Carolina ’s Guidance Essential Standards.  I also meet with students individually and in small groups to address specific identified needs that are distracting students from their learning.  I consult and collaborate with teachers, parents, and community personnel to provide for students’ needs and to help maximize all students’ potential.  In addition, I coordinate school-wide programs such as the Career Fair, MANNA Backpack program, Safety Patrol, MANNA Food Drive , Health Fair, and welcoming new families.

I am part of the Student Services Team which includes the School Social Worker, the School Nurse, and the School Psychologist. I serve on the Crisis Response Team, the Tiered Intervention, Prevention, and Support (TIPS) team, the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support (PBIS) team, the Child Help and Parent Support (CHAPS) team, and the School Improvement Team.  My office is in the fifth grade wing of the school and you can reach me at ext. 502 or Claire.shippey@bcsemail.org
