Enka Intermediate's Unified basketball game.

Cheers and excitement echoed throughout Enka Intermediate School (EIS) as players, students, and staff  joined together for a one-of-a-kind Basketball game.

For the second year, EIS has held the Unified Champion Schools Basketball game, sponsored by Special Olympics of North Carolina. The games consisted of a team of partners and athletes versus the teachers. The school came together to cheer on their peers and educators.

“It is an amazing feeling when the athletes make a goal,” said Cindy Vaughn, Exceptional Children Teacher. “The players witnessed firsthand the excitement and cheers of their peers erupting from the stands. This is their day to win, and feel like the stars they are. There’s no other feeling like it.”

For Ms. Vaughn, it’s an experience she will never forget and something she is proud to be a part of.

“I love playing against the kids,” she said. “Seeing the pure joy and happiness on their faces as they make a goal is what it’s all about. That is what makes this game so special.”

As for what makes EIS a special place to be, this is just a piece to the puzzle, she said.

“We are a big family at EIS,” she explained. “The PE students that played alongside my students were great sports. This is a school where everyone is accepted. Our staff and kids make our school family stronger and amazing.”
