This past school year, students from Charles D. Owen Middle School (OMS) had the opportunity to step outside of the classroom and onto the water for an unique learning experience. The group of curious and adventurous middle schoolers learned the basics of kayaking, many for the first time at the Buncombe County Aquatic Center.
Throughout the day, students were taught how to properly enter and exit a kayak, how to paddle and steer, and most importantly how to stay safe on the water. Instructors guided them through a series of engaging hands-on lessons that built both confidence and teamwork.
What began with nervous laughter and wobbly starts quickly turned into cheers of excitement as students successfully navigated the pool. Some practiced turning in circles, while others challenged themselves to race from one end of the pool to the other.
This experience was more than just a fun day at the pool, it helped students develop perseverance, coordination, and a greater appreciation for outdoor recreation. For many, it was a chance to step outside their comfort zone and realize they are capable of more than they imagine.
The trip left a lasting impact, showing students that learning happens all around them - and that sometimes, the best classroom is the one where you paddle your way forward.
