Student Volunteers

Help FANS Help Swannanoa and the Owen School District via the FANS Community Yard Sale (at Owen High May 17) and/or by making a direct donation for the Community Service Award, or to the FANS Hurricane Helene Relief Fund.

You can help FANS happily encourage students in the Owen community through a Gift for Community Service and its donations to the schools to support student needs. The Community Service Award sponsored by FANS (Friends and Neighbors of Swannanoa) recognizes the significant contribution of seniors from Owen High School. The gifts of $500 are sent to the student's post-secondary school choice and helps them pay for expenses related to attending college. Previous recipients of the FANS Community Service Award seem to be thriving in their college communities and in their careers. The first award recipient, Lilly LLoyd continued to inspire others by being active at Appalachian State University and has been recognized by the Appalachian State's Office of International Education & Development with the Global Leadership Award and works with the College Access Partnership called Gear Up. Lilly wrote to us with gratitude that the award was of great help to her and her family as she started her college career. Bailey Mundy, pursued her college degree at Western Carolina University and is on the Chancellor’s List. She plans to be a math teacher and has been accepted into the Teacher Education Program at Western. She continues to positively impact the community she lives in and has helped a local elementary school start a math club. She has also been involved with the UP program at Western which is a postsecondary inclusive program. We hope that you can contribute to this fund which assists local students in achieving their post secondary goals. The candidates selected through a process established at Owen High have a heart for community service and are indeed making an impact on the world.

The Friends and Neighbors of Swannanoa otherwise known as FANS is a non-profit organization with the mission of “Working for a strong and vibrant Swannanoa by encouraging active involvement, and fostering community spirit.” FANS made significant contributions to each of the schools in the Owen district following Hurricane Helene and is excited to have the FANS Spring Yard Sale on the Owen High Campus Saturday May 17th. The proceeds of the Yard Sale make it possible for FANS to serve the community in many ways.
