🌱🌎🐾 The visitors, staff, and animals at WNC Nature Center have nicer surroundings thanks to Clyde A. Erwin High School students.
As part of a schoolwide Day of Service on Nov. 19, Erwin students spent the morning cleaning and sprucing up garden beds at the local wildlife center. Another group did crafts with the residents at River Bend Health and Rehabilitation, while a third group fed and helped care for the animals at Animal Haven of Asheville. On Dec. 3, students worked on a Habitat for Humanity home, made toys at Asheville Humane Society, decorated for the holidays at River Bend, and read to kids at nearby West Buncombe Elementary.
“The students got to choose where they volunteered, and I think it speaks to the heart of Erwin that they care about their community and the greater good,” said Erwin High school counselor Lyndsay Morris. “Service learning teaches them how to connect with their community, because community matters. And after Hurricane Helene, the importance of helping out is more prevalent than ever.”
