After more than two decades of unwavering service to Buncombe County Schools (BCS), Sergeant Corey Ray is retiring from the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO). A fixture in the hallways and campuses of the Erwin, Roberson, and North Buncombe districts, Sgt. Ray has long been known as a steady presence, a trusted protector, and a friend to students, staff, and families alike.
Throughout his years as a School Resource Officer, Sgt. Ray built more than just safety plans - he built relationships. Whether it was greeting students with a smile, mentoring young people through challenging times, or supporting staff through everyday concerns, Sgt. Ray was always there. He also served behind the scenes, providing security and support at monthly school board meetings, helping ensure the community’s voice was heard in a safe and respectful environment.
At the May board meeting, Sgt. Ray was publicly honored for his dedication, professionalism, and heart for service. Surrounded by his family, fellow officers, school leaders, and community members, he received a heartfelt thanks for the impact he made over the years.
As Sgt. Ray steps into retirement this June, he leaves behind a legacy marked by loyalty, compassion, and commitment to the safety and well-being of Buncombe County’s youth. His presence will surely be missed, but his influence will continue to shape lives for years to come.
Best of luck Sgt. Ray on this well-earned next chapter. Thank you for your service.
