North Buncombe High School celebrated its aspiring educators with a special “signing day” ceremony, recognizing six seniors in the school’s Teacher Cadet program as they prepare to continue their journey in education-focused fields at the collegiate level.
The event, modeled after athletic signing days, honored the students’ commitment to pursue careers in teaching by symbolically signing with their future colleges and universities.
“I could not be more proud of our senior Cadets,” said NBHS Teacher Cadet Program Coordinator Andrew Shelton. “We decided to celebrate their hard work and dedication to the teaching profession through a signing day. Through this we could recognize their next steps in, what I am sure, will be lives that positively impact our world.”
The senior cadets recognized were:
Laurel Seddon, who will attend Davidson College
Katie Marie Reece, headed to Appalachian State University
Caylee Smart, enrolled at Lee University
Gracie King, also attending Appalachian State University
Sienna Charlier, bound for Furman University
Jack Sandifer, who will attend Clemson University
Throughout the year, cadets have worked alongside mentor teachers, learning the fundamentals of education while engaging directly with students in local classrooms. The program is part of a statewide initiative to inspire young people to consider careers in education early on.
The ceremony included brief remarks from Shelton, not only congratulating the students but giving them insight on how far they’ve come in their time as teacher cadets. After the signing, students enjoyed a reception with their friends, family, and peers.
Thank you to the Buncombe County Schools Foundation for supporting the Teacher Cadet program!
