Summer Strings Camp for Buncombe County

The sounds of stringed instruments echoed through the halls of Valley Springs Middle School this week during the first annual summer strings camp.

The sounds of stringed instruments echoed through the halls of Valley Springs Middle School this week during the first annual summer strings camp for students across Buncombe County. Young musicians in sixth through twelfth grade enjoyed a week of creating music and making friends as they prepared for a public performance on August 2.

“It’s been a really great way for students to get back on their instruments over the summer, and they’ve grown a lot over the week,” said Valley Springs strings teacher Ms. Elizabeth Terry, who worked alongside other BCS strings teachers, including Mr. Sam Lyons and Mr. Paul Zinke.

According to Terry, students studied violin, viola, bass, guitar, and fiddle techniques while forming a high school orchestra, middle school orchestra, fiddle group, and four small chamber orchestras. During the week, they welcomed special guests from the Asheville Symphony Orchestra who led sectionals and gave exclusive musical performances.

“I think it has been a very great opportunity to be able to work with others and improve my playing of the viola,” said Vincent, an incoming Cane Creek Middle School eighth-grader.

“It’s been really fun,” added Abrielle, who will also attend Cane Creek. “I’ve been challenged by some new music that I never would have thought about playing before.”

The public is invited to the camp’s free culminating performance on Friday, August 2 at 2:30 p.m. at Valley Springs Middle School.
