Schools Earn 'Safe Sports School' Awards

BCS is a fantastic place to be a student-athlete! We celebrate our schools who have earned and maintained the National Athletic Trainers' Association Safe Sports School Award! The award and designation recognizes secondary schools that provide safe environments for student athletes, and reinforces the importance of providing the best level of care, injury prevention, and treatment.

This year, Charles D. Owen High School, Enka High School, and A. C. Reynolds High School earned the award and proudly hung their Safe Sports School banners in their gymnasiums.

In 2015, Clyde A. Erwin High School, North Buncombe High School, and T. C. Roberson High School earned the award, as did Erwin Middle School, North Buncombe Middle School, and Valley Springs Middle.
Special thanks to Mission Sports Medicine and Pardee Hospital Sports Medicine for helping asses and report on our schools for these awards.

In order for a school to achieve Safe Sports School status (for a 3 year period), each athletic program must do the following:
• Create a positive athletic health care administrative system
• Provide or coordinate pre-participation physical examinations
• Promote safe and appropriate practice and competition facilities
• Plan for selection, fit function and proper maintenance of athletic equipment
• Provide a permanent, appropriately equipped area to evaluate and treat injured athletes
• Develop injury and illness prevention strategies, including protocols for environmental conditions
• Provide or facilitate injury intervention
• Create and rehearse a venue-specific Emergency Action Plan
• Provide or facilitate psychosocial consultation and nutritional counseling/education
• Be sure athletes and parents are educated of the potential benefits and risks in sports as well as their responsibilities
