The wheels on the bus go ’round and ’round at Buncombe County Schools (BCS). Our dedicated school bus drivers travel over 12,000 miles daily to ensure students make it safely to and from school. February 14-18 is National Love the Bus Week, and our schools have shared some wonderful photos showing their appreciation for their drivers. Director of Transportation Mr. David Rhoney says he is proud of the men and women who drive for BCS.
“They’re just really caring people,” said Mr. Rhoney. “They do a fantastic job not only ensuring the safety of the children, but also care about the kids that ride our buses. The drivers take their job very seriously and are really exceptional people. I couldn’t ask for a better team of drivers.”
Mr. Rhoney stressed the importance of the BCS bus drivers, and the critical role they play in our students' lives.
“It’s pretty neat to be the first Buncombe County employee to see that child in the morning, and the last to see the child in afternoon,” explained Mr. Rhoney. “You get to build supportive relationships with those students on the bus.”
Buncombe County Schools is also looking to fill the next driver seat on many school buses. There’s just a few criteria each applicant must meet.
“Our future driver would be someone that understands the importance of safety,” said Mr. Rhoney. “They need to love what they do, and enjoy being around kids.”
BCS provides full time drivers full benefits such as retirement and insurance. There are part time positions available as well. BCS is proud to offer all school bus drivers a “route bonus” based on the amount of routes covered. Those that drive between 10-19 routes receive a $100 bonus on their check. Anyone driving over 20 routes gets a $200 bonus.
