2020-21 Return to Learn Checklist

Hello, BCS Families- Our teachers and staff are looking forward to welcoming your children back to school this fall! While this year will certainly look different, our mission and goal remain the same: to provide your child with a rigorous and engaging learning experience. If your child will be a remote-only learner, your virtual teacher will provide further guidance and expectations for the school year. If your child will be on Plan B Beyond, we have an important checklist to complete each day before you bring your child to the bus stop or drop your child off at school.

  • Make sure your child practices wearing a face covering and understands that they will need to wear one while at school. If you do not send your child to school with a mask, one will be provided for them.

  • Monitor your child’s temperature at home by taking it each morning. If your child’s temperature is 100.4 or higher, they should not attend school that day. If a student has a temperature when they arrive at school, the student will be sent home. Our schools will use contactless thermometers. Please know that infrared thermometers are not harmful to students or adults. If you have a concern about the thermometers, please reach out to your school nurse.

  • Monitor your child for other symptoms of COVID-19. The symptoms of coronavirus are similar to the regular seasonal influenza and include fever (100.4 or higher), coughing, and shortness of breath. Some people with coronavirus have reported additional symptoms, such as a runny nose, sore throat, nausea, sinus pressure, lethargy, loss of taste and/or smell, vomiting, and diarrhea. If you, your child, or anyone in your family experiences these symptoms, please keep your child at home that day and contact your primary care physician. You may also complete the Buncombe County Symptom Checker for further guidance.

  • Be reminded that if there is a lab-confirmed COVID-19 case in your home, please follow the guidelines listed below from Buncombe County Public Health Professionals:

  • Individuals with lab-confirmed COVID-19 will need to stay home, away from others, until they can say ‘yes’ to ALL three (3) of the following questions:

  • - Has it been at least 10 days since you first had symptoms?

  • - Have you been fever-free for at least 24 hours (1 day) without using fever- reducing medicine?

  • - Have your other symptoms improved?

  • Exposed individuals who had close contact to the person with COVID-19 (defined as being within 6 feet from the person for a cumulative 15 minutes or longer) will need to stay home and quarantine for 14 days from their last contact to the positive person. If you have questions about these guidelines, please call the Ask A School Nurse Hotline at 828-407-2417 (English and Spanish).

  • Remain flexible with bus transportation pick up times due to taking each child’s temperature and ensuring there is only one child per seat. Your child’s school is calling you with the bus number and estimated times. Initially, bus stop times could vary as much as fifteen (15) minutes from the estimated time. Please also plan to wait with your child at the bus stop, or appoint another adult to wait with them in the event their temperature is above 100.4 and they cannot come to school.

  • Remember the best protection against COVID-19 at this time is to stay at home when you feel sick and observe the 3 Ws:

    • Wear a cloth face covering if you are around people outside your immediate household;

  • Wait 6 feet apart. Avoid close physical contact with others outside your immediate household;

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or use alcohol- based hand sanitizer.

  • Rest assured that your child’s health and well-being are top priorities for Buncombe County Schools. Please visit to learn more about the safety protocols implemented for this school year, community resources available to you, childcare options in our area, school nutrition information, and much more.

  • This year, our annual student health history form has moved to a digital version. Please update your child's information using the following link: Annual Health Update Questionnaire for Parents. A paper copy of this form will also be available at your child’s school.  This form will be used to gather information about student health needs. All health information is confidential. School nurses share health information with school staff only on a need-to-know basis in order to ensure the health and safety of your child (unless you submit a "do not share" letter/email to school principal and school nurse. If you prefer to complete a paper form you may request one at the school. The safety of your child and their information is a top priority. A HIPAA agreement with Google and multi-factor authentication is in place.
