Summer Academy Application Information Sheet

Erwin High School and A C Reynolds High School will be the host schools for Summer Academy. Summer Academy is scheduled to begin on June 28. All classes will be held in person on these two campuses. This is a requirement of the legislation which is providing funding for the Summer Academy. The only virtual option will be NCVPS and AB-Tech courses which have criteria that must be met prior to registration through your school based DLA, not through the Summer Academy Application process.

Summer Academy operates Monday through Thursday from June 28 - Aug 3, 2022

  • ★IMPORTANT! Students must keep your school issued device and charger and bring with you to Summer Academy each day.

  • ★IMPORTANT! There are two separate application forms this year - one for the Erwin site and one for the Reynolds site. Students should choose the application for the site they wish to attend.

Once you complete the online application, you will receive an email in early June with details and directions about your course meeting times and bus transportation details– that is why a correct and often-checked email address is important. The application requires a student and parent/guardian email address. If your parent/guardian does not have an email, you must list another close relative or friend and provide their email information.

COVID Protocol: All current best practices as outlined in the CDC’s Recommendations for Community Facilities will be followed each day that students are in the building. The safety of our Summer Academy students and staff is a priority.

Summer Academy offers students the opportunity to take one or two courses each session that they have failed before. You can take two courses each session. There are two sessions of credit recovery. Session One is June 28 - July 14, and Session Two is July 18 - August 3. If you only need one or two credit recovery courses you may choose either Session One or Session Two. If you need more than two credit recovery courses you will need to register for both sessions. Also, if you only need two credit recovery courses, you can register for mornings only for both sessions or afternoons only for both sessions. Once you have successfully completed an online credit recovery course you can stop attending Summer Academy. In other words, the end date is dependent upon your effort.

Summer Academy will offer teacher-taught courses for students who need first time credit and have not failed the course and for those students who feel they would best learn in a teacher-taught class versus computer-based instruction. New credit courses begin June 28 and end on August 3 and full attendance/ participation is required for the entire session of Summer Academy - June 28 - August 3, 2022.

We will offer all of the core academic courses by listing them on the application. However, the final decision of courses to be offered will be based on student needs and number of requests for each course

We hope to offer a fourth math option course and additionally, we hope to offer an elective type course such as Art, Music, a Foreign Language or a CTE course. Again, the final decision of courses to be offered will be based on student requests for each course and may differ at each site.

We are planning to have increased support and additional services for our English Language Learners this summer. Specifically, we will have interpreters at each site to assist with student and parent communication. We will also employ ESL teachers to provide an opportunity for these students to earn Academic Support credits and work on math and English credits, as well using an inclusion and support model in other courses.

If you are not currently enrolled in Buncombe County Schools you must contact the counselor at your base school and re-enroll prior to May 26 in order to earn credits in Summer Academy.

Limited bus transportation will be offered for Summer Academy students. We will have pick up sites at each of the high school campuses and to also identify pockets of students located within each community that may have a significant number of students attending Summer Academy that would warrant a pick up site. We will also have midday bus routes to return “morning only students” to their base schools and pick up “afternoon only students.” Generally, Enka and North Buncombe students will be picked up at their schools and transported to the Erwin HS Summer Academy and Owen and TC Roberson students will be picked up at their schools and transported to the AC Reynolds Summer Academy site. Students may attend a different site if they provide their own transportation.

Breakfast and lunch will be provided each day by Buncombe County Schools Child Nutrition Department at no charge to students or parents.

Once registration is closed, we will notify you via email if the course is being offered. Once again, your email address is important as a means of communication. It is also likely that we will need to contact you or your parents by phone during Summer Academy. Please take time to set up your voice mailbox and make sure you keep it cleared out from time to time so we can continue to communicate with you about important matters.
