Calendar Update, Nov. 5, 2021
Posted on 11/05/2021
The Buncombe County Board of Education voted to adjust our calendar during the week of Thanksgiving.BCS Communications

The BCS Board of Education approved* the following calendar change at the November Board Meeting. Below are more helpful details for families.

November 22-23, 2021 will be designated as Local Remote Learning Days.

Both days will consist of asynchronous instruction for students. Quality instructional tasks will be posted prior to 10 a.m. each day. Those assignments can be completed at the student’s own pace. Students will have until December 1, 2021, to complete all assignments. Students will be counted present for the day/class period upon completion of assignments.

School Meal Options:
Meals will be available for curbside pickup between 8 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. Breakfast and lunch will be provided.

Childcare Options:
• YMCA/Aftercare
YMCA will operate at all “School’s Out” sites on November 22 and 23. Families who are not already enrolled with the YMCA may enroll in “drop-in care” via the YMCA website or by calling the YMCA at 828-210-9622.

• Headstart
Headstart will have optional teacher workdays on November 22 and 23.

Inclement Weather Plan:
At the November 4 Board of Education meeting, we also presented our winter weather strategy for this year. Here are the potential options if inclement weather impacts our region.

• If the event is quite severe, we would likely make the day an annual leave day. Staff will not report to work and there would be no remote instruction.

• If the event is minor, the first day will be an Optional Teacher Workday. Remote learning will be asynchronous with teachers posting assignments by 10 a.m.

• If there are subsequent days also impacted by the storm, days 2, 3, 4, etc. will be synchronous remote learning days. Instruction will begin at 10 a.m.

Each weather event will be unique. The district will communicate clear instructions to families depending on the exact situation. Please ensure that your contact information is correct in PowerSchool. You may also download the BCS App on your smartphone for even faster weather and emergency notifications.
