In Buncombe County Schools, athletics provides students additional opportunities to pursue excellence and develop skills for the future.

The 59th Western North Carolina Sports Awards Banquet recently honored student-athletes for their achievements, including multiple accomplished competitors from Buncombe County's high schools. The Aug. 15 event was hosted by the Mountain Amateur Athletic Club (MAAC), and honored athletes from this past school year and 2020, when no banquet was held due to the pandemic.

"I wish to extend a special congratulations to the student athletes from Buncombe County Schools that were selected as 2021 award winners or scholarship recipients by the Mountain Amateur Athletic Club," said BCS District Athletic Specialist David Ball. "To be recognized and distinguished as an award winner from across the entire region by the selection committee is a great honor."

Ball also expressed appreciation for the MAAC and its Board of Directors for their hard work in organizing this year's nomination and selection process, as well as the memorable awards event.

"It is great to see the hard work and effort of student-athletes and teams from across Western North Carolina recognized," he added.
