The 2021 Summer Academy: Full STEAM Ahead starts Monday, and teachers across the 12 BCS host schools are preparing their classrooms for hands-on, problem-based learning.
At Barnardsville Elementary School, kindergarten teacher Julie Sockwell spent Thursday preparing math games for her students. The games are part of a weeklong project that integrates math, science, reading and writing, and collaboration, similar to how BCS STEM Labs enhance classroom learning during the regular school year. Her students will work in teams to create a weekly solution to a proposed problem that lets them demonstrate their learning. During the first week, Ms. Sockwell’s students will study sound and make their own musical instruments!
“They’re working in both groups and individually to build those academic and social skills,” Ms. Sockwell said. “I’m excited to get started.”
BCS Summer Academy: Full Steam Ahead for grades K through 12 will begin a six-week schedule of Mondays through Thursdays on June 14. This comprehensive effort of recovery will take place on 12 of our school campuses across the district and host around 3,250 students including 2,400 in grades K through 4.
