Enka Middle School (EMS) eighth grade social studies teacher Stephanie Wolfe got a big surprise last Wednesday when Tammy Jones and Kipper Schauer, hosts of The Morning Mix with Tammy and Kipper on Mix 96.5, walked into the cafeteria during a special luncheon for staff.

EMS teachers, staff, and administrators erupted in cheers and applause as Ms. Jones announced that Ms. Wolfe is the Mix 96.5 Teacher of the Year. She was chosen from among all this year’s Teachers of the Month.

“I was totally shocked,” Ms. Wolfe said. “I know the nominees were great, especially this year, and I didn’t feel like I’d done anything special except to be there for the kids.”

But Ms. Wolfe’s recognition didn’t surprise EMS Principal Karen Barnhill. She and EMS teachers talked about Ms. Wolfe’s empathy for students and colleagues. They know her as an authentic educator who offers respect and encouragement to her students and always looks for ways to make learning more fun and interesting for everyone in her classroom.

“Ms. Wolfe is a compassionate and professional educator,” Ms. Barnhill said. “Her intrinsic ability to reach all students, regardless of their backgrounds, is truly inspirational.”

Ms. Wolfe said her students inspire her too.

“They’re funny, smart, and have insights you’d never think of,” she said. “I really love them, and I always try to be real with them.”
