We’re now accepting applications for grades K-12!

Buncombe County Schools Virtual Academy (BCSVA) is a versatile educational program designed to respond to the needs of students and families who are looking for opportunities beyond traditional school schedules. BCS has combined multiple tools to partner with families in our area to offer a full set of online courses, as well as access to engaging projects, clubs, and other in-person learning experiences for students. Full enrollment in the BCSVA is free for families residing in the BCS school district.

Please be aware that the BCSVA structure is different than the remote learning option available currently*. BCSVA is also a year-by-year commitment. Student learning in BCSVA will be independent and self-paced. Students will work with a certified teacher, but there will be only limited ‘synchronous’ learning via video conferencing.

This year, we are expanding the program to K-5.

BCSVA elementary families should be prepared for a parent, guardian, or another facilitator at home to have an active role daily in the learning process. Our program will provide an online learning platform including lessons and activities. We will also have a certified BCS teacher who will partner with families to personalize the experience and provide opportunities for engagement and support. The program is asynchronous, however, and will not include constant teacher monitoring for every student throughout the school day.

Here’s how we’d describe a successful candidate for the BCSVA elementary program:

- Ability to create and follow a daily learning schedule
- Willingness to communicate frequently with the BCSVA teacher
- Ability to work independently for sustained amounts of time
- Willingness to cooperate with a parent, guardian, or other adult serving in the role of learning coach
- Regular and reliable participation in teacher-led learning sessions
- Commitment to remain in the BCSVA through a full academic year

If you are interested in the remote option for your K-5 child, please fill out an interest survey which will help us in the planning process. >>

If you are interested in the 6-12 program, you may begin the application process now. >>

*This year’s remote model or Plan C was designed and implemented in response to the COVID-19 crisis.
