2020 Participate Learning Teacher of the Year

A.C. Reynolds Middle School Spanish teacher Martha Camacho Higuera wants her students to go far beyond fluency.

“More than learning the language, I want to inspire my students to love culture and respect the way other people think,” she said. “I think that my students are getting more open-minded. They understand that we don’t need to be the same to live together. I want to show them that the world is too big to be thinking the same way all your life.”

Ms. Camacho Higuera walked in to a big surprise at the A.C. Reynolds Middle gymnasium on Friday when she learned that she is a 2020 Participate Learning Teacher of the Year. Fellow Reynolds District educators and staff from Participate Learning cheered and clapped as she walked with Reynolds Middle Principal Stanley Wheless. She received a commemorative plaque, a laptop computer, a $1,000 check, and a physically-distant punch and cake party on Friday.

“I can’t believe it,” she said. “I’m really happy and excited.”

Participate Learning partners with school districts in Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina to bring in teachers from around the world, said Ms. Katy Turnbull, manager of professional learning and culture for the company.

“Our mission is to unite the world through global education,” she said. “Our Teacher of the Year award is a chance to acknowledge the top teachers in our network of more than 1,000 teachers and the work that they are doing.”

Along with two other North Carolina teachers, Participate Learning recognized Ms. Camacho Higuera for being a “global ambassador” of her native Colombia and Spanish-speaking cultures from around the world. Ms. Turnbull praised Ms. Camacho Higuera for showing leadership outside her classroom, impacting her school and the surrounding community. She teaches middle school Spanish, a course for high school Spanish credit, and Conexiones, a continuation of the Dual Language Spanish Immersion program from elementary school.

“In every single one of these academic settings the language was so incredibly rich,” Ms. Turnbull said. “She gave so many unique and creative opportunities for students to use their Spanish and apply it in meaningful ways.”

Earlier this year, Ms. Camacho Higuera and Oakley Elementary School Spanish Dual Language teacher Libia De la Rosa brought together students and families from both schools for a giant Carnaval de Barranquilla celebration. By participating in the dances, songs, and colorful costumes, students developed a deeper appreciation for Colombian cultural traditions.

During BCS Virtual Days, Ms. Camacho Higuera organized Zoom conversations with her students and students from Spain and Colombia. They discussed the diverse traditions and Spanish pronunciations throughout the world.

“She has changed the culture of our Spanish program,” Mr. Wheless said. “We have a waiting list of students excited to take her classes. This Participate Teacher of the Year award is a well-deserved honor.”

La Maestra de Español de A.C. Reynolds, la señorita Martha Camacho Higuera, quiere que sus alumnos vayan más allá de la fluidez del idioma.

“Más que aprender el idioma, quiero inspirar a mis alumnos a amar la cultura y respetar la forma que otros piensan” mencionó ella, “yo pienso que mis alumnos están abriendo sus mentes. Comprenden que no necesitamos ser todos iguales para convivir. Les quiero mostrar que el mundo es demasiado grande como para pensar de la misma manera toda su vida.”

La Srta. Camacho Higuera se encontró con una gran sorpresa en el gimnasio de A.C Reynolds el viernes cuando supo que es la Maestra de Enseñanza del Año del 2020. Los maestros compañeros del Distrito de Reynolds y el personal del reconocimiento (Participate Learning) celebraron y aplaudieron mientras caminó junto al director de la Escuela Secundaria Reynolds el señor Stanley Wheless. Ella recibió el viernes una placa conmemorativa, un computador laptop, un cheque de $1,000 y una fiesta a distancia con pastel y bebidas.

“No puedo creerlo” mencionó ella, “estoy realmente feliz y emocionada.”

“Participate Learning” está asociado con distritos escolares en Virginia, Carolina del Norte y Carolina del Sur para traer a maestros de alrededor del mundo, dijo la señorita Katy Turnbull, gerente de aprendizaje profesional y cultura de la compañía.

“Nuestra misión es unir al mundo a través de la educación global,” mencionó ella. “Nuestro premio del Maestro(a) del año es una oportunidad para reconocer a los mejores maestros en nuestra red de trabajo de más de 1,000 maestros y el trabajo que están haciendo.”

“Participate Learning” reconoció a la Srta. Camacho Higuera por ser una “embajadora global” de Colombia, su país natal, y las culturas hispanas de alrededor del mundo. La Srta. Turnbull elogió a la Srta. Camacho Higuera por demostrar liderazgo fuera de su sala de clases, impactando su escuela y las comunidades del entorno. Ella enseña español de educación secundaria, un curso para crédito de Bachillerato y Conexiones, una continuación del programa de Inmersión Bilingüe de la Escuela Elemental.

“En cada uno de estos ambientes académicos, el idioma era tan increíblemente enriquecedor” menciono la Srta. Turnbull. “Ella entregó tantas oportunidades únicas y creativas para que los alumnos usaran su español y lo aplicasen de una forma que les hiciera sentido.”

Al comienzo de este año, la Srta. Camacho Higuera y la maestra del programa bilingüe de la Escuela Elemental Oakley, la Srta. Libia de la Rosa, juntaron a los alumnos y sus familias de ambas escuelas para un carnaval gigante para la celebración de Barranquilla. Los alumnos desarrollaron una apreciación más profunda por las tradiciones culturales colombianas a través
de bailes, canciones y coloridos trajes típicos.

Durante los Días Virtuales de BCS, la Srta. Camacho Higuera organizó conversaciones por Zoom entre sus alumnos y alumnos de España y Colombia. Hablaron sobre las diversas tradiciones y pronunciaciones en español a través del mundo.

“Ella cambió la cultura de nuestro programa de español,” dijo el Sr. Wheless. “Tenemos una lista de espera de alumnos que están emocionados de tomar su clase. Este reconocimiento del Maestro de Enseñanza del Año (Participate Teacher) es un honor bien merecido.”
