A message from Buncombe County Schools Superin
tendent Dr. Tony Baldwin on the evening of March 10, 2020:
Today, Governor Cooper declared a state of emergency for our state in combating the possible spread of the Coronavirus. The safety and well-being of all our students and staff is always a primary concern, and we have been monitoring this issue closely in consultation with Buncombe County health officials.
After meeting with district leadership and consulting with Board of Education members, the decision has been made to suspend all out-of-state travel until further notice. This decision applies to all school-sponsored student trips out-of-state and all employee work-related trips out-of-state. Issues regarding fees paid and refunds will be addressed at a future date since the circumstance is unique.
As of now, in-state travel is not suspended but please understand that principals may need to alter or cancel local or in-state activities on a case-by-case basis. As new information becomes available, further guidance will be issued. For example, future changes to athletics, facility use, school visitors, and other school-based events may be necessary. If so, you will be notified immediately.
I want to thank each of you for your understanding and cooperation as we work to keep everyone safe.
We encourage people to stay up to date on COVID-19 in Buncombe County by visiting buncombecounty.org/bcready.
Sincerely,
Superintendent Dr. Tony Baldwin
