Muddy Sneakers at Fairview Elementary

Fifth-graders at Fairview Elementary explored the world around them during their recent Muddy Sneakers Expedition.

Fifth-graders at Fairview Elementary School (FES) explored nature and learned more about the world around them in their recent Muddy Sneakers Expedition. Students identified leaves, trees, animals, and more!

PTA parent and FES employee Kenya Hoffart is excited students at FES can participate in this innovative program. Muddy Sneakers is based in Brevard and serves select schools in WNC and South Carolina.

“The mission of Muddy Sneakers is to awaken in children a deeply felt connection with the natural world,” said Ms. Hoffart. “Years ago, the founders of this program had a great desire to connect local children with the conserved natural areas of the surrounding communities, all while making learning both fun and meaningful. After a few years, the Muddy Sneakers team decided to focus on fifth-grade science education. They believe children this age are advanced in their thinking but still filled with wonder and interest in the natural world.”

Muddy Sneakers works with schools to customize activities to students’ interests and schedules. This immersive science experience supports teachers’ day-to-day lessons.

“Fifth-graders from FES will explore nearby protected lands, streams, and more as they examine the wonders of the natural world and learn about such things as weather, terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, forces and motion, matter, energy, and much more,” said Ms. Hoffart. “Students will see, touch, smell, and ultimately understand the science curriculum as it unfolds before their eyes, and in their backyards.”

Muddy Sneakers will teach children in groups of 12 students or less per instructor. All instructors are highly-qualified naturalist educators with an array of experiences and teaching styles.
