College football fans will see some familiar faces cheering during the Citrus Bowl pregame show on January 1, 2020. The North Buncombe High School Varsity Cheerleaders will take their skills to the field of Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida, before a crowd of 60,000 cheering spectators.
“This season, we wanted to go back to the origins of cheerleading and build the team into true spirit-exemplary students and ambassadors for the school within the community,” said Ms. Holly Griffin, who coaches the team alongside Ms. Kristen Nunez. “We’re very honored by this invitation and can’t wait for their performance.”
The Blackhawks were invited to perform after earning the Superior Team trophy through Varsity Spirit’s Universal Cheerleading Association Spirit Camp. The team will join trophy winners from other Varsity Spirit camps in the Sunshine State on December 29 to rehearse for the New Year’s Day performance.
According to a Varsity Spirit press release, the Citrus Bowl has been a college football tradition giving cheerleaders and dancers opportunities to perform since 1947.
Each year, athletics, fine arts, and extracurricular programs in Buncombe County Schools provide students additional opportunities to grow and excel. We’re continually proud of our students who work hard both in and out of the classroom, participating in historic and high-profile performances, and competing in state titles.
