New Administrative Assignments for 2019-20

Superintendent Dr. Tony Baldwin today announces five new administrative assignments for the 2019-20 school year. (ASHEVILLE)- Superintendent Dr. Tony Baldwin today announces five new administrative assignments for Buncombe County Schools for the 2019-20 school year. The new assignments are as follows:

Carla Shipman is the new Principal at Emma Elementary School. Ms. Shipman previously served as Assistant Principal at Emma and Candler Elementary from 2017-2019. She’s also served as an Elementary Instructional Coach (2011-17), Title I reading specialist (2010-11), and Teacher (2003-10).

Ben Alexander is the new Principal at Valley Springs Middle School. Mr. Alexander served as the Assistant Principal at Cane Creek Middle Schools from 2017-19, Assistant Principal at Enka High School (2015-17), and Latin teacher (2012-15).

Steve Molinari is the new Principal at Erwin Middle School. Since 2013, Mr. Molinari has served as Assistant Principal at Enka Middle. He previously held a variety of positions in multiple school systems across the state including Asheville and Granville City, Wake County, Onslow County, and N.C. State University.

Danny Fusco is the new Principal of Charles C. Bell Elementary. He has served as the Principal at Oakley Elementary since 2014. He previously held Assistant Principal positions at North Windy Ridge Intermediate (2011-14), Cane Creek Middle (2007-11), and Avery’s Creek Elementary (2005-07)

Dana Haney is the new Principal at Oakley Elementary. She’s served as the Assistant Principal at Enka Intermediate (2016-19) and Oakley/Leicester (2013-16). She’s also been a teacher at Candler and Emma Elementary Schools.

(Update) David Rhoney has been hired as the director of the BCS Transportation Department. Mr. Rhoney has held various teaching positions in Buncombe County and Burke County Schools in the last 20 years. His last position was Assistant Principal at North Buncombe High School (2017-19).

We also want to wish a fond farewell to the staff members who’ve announced their retirement this year. This includes Jenny Klein, Principal at Charles C. Bell Elementary, who has worked in education for over three decades. Paula Garland, Executive Assistant to the Assistant Superintendent has held that position since 2004 and has worked in various positions in Buncombe County Government and Buncombe County Schools since 1978. Fonda Durner, Director of Transportation, is also retiring after 29 years with Buncombe County Schools. Human Resource Department Director Cynthia Lopez will also retire this year after 19 years in the position.

Buncombe County Schools is in the process of reviewing its website to ensure compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
