North Buncombe Middle's MathCounts team took first at the county level and second at the regional level.By: Benjamin Rickert, Communications Dept.

Math was a team sport at this year’s Buncombe County and regional MathCounts competitions! Students worked individually and in teams to solve tough math puzzles under pressure. At our Buncombe competition, 99 students formed 27 teams from seven middle schools and one intermediate school.

Our county winners from North Buncombe Middle (Jordan Andrews, Allana Adams, Ruby Blue, and Everett Tucker) progressed to the February 2 regional competition involving over 170 students in 22 teams from across Western North Carolina. The students then placed second overall, qualifying for the upcoming state event. Cane Creek Middle’s Jonah Catlin received the highest individual score and will also compete in the state competition.

During MathCounts, students worked to solve 30 questions individually without a calculator in the first round. During the next “rapid fire” round, they had 6 minutes to solve each of four sets of math problems. Students then worked with their teams of four in the final round to solve ten complex problems in under 20 minutes.

Congratulations to all of our mathletes on a job well done!
