Superintendent's Comments

Budget Presentation I want to recognize the efforts of our district leadership team in preparing the excellent presentation of three very important support documents for Buncombe County Schools – the Capital Outlay Budget ($12.6M); Enrollments and Facility Needs Report; and Local Operating Expense Budget ($68M-Current) – each was filled with an incredible amount of data relative to the 2018-2018 school year ahead. Thanks to Mrs. Deborah Frisby, Mr. Tim Fierle, and Miss Amanda Buckner, Mr. Clark Wyatt, Mr. Greg Hensley, and Mrs. Alesha Reardon. A special thanks to our Principals: Doris Sellers, Chris Thompson, Nicole Roberts, and Denise Montgomery for their time and effort in this process. Mr. Barry Pace, your participation was appreciated as well and I think you would agree that the top two themes throughout the capital end were instructional technology and school security!

Celebrating Success and Special Visitors Over the past week we have experienced an annual student recognition event, hosted two VIP guests from state leadership, and celebrated a high school team of students receiving a tremendous national honor.

  • On April 25, 104 of our highest academic achieving seniors were recognized at the Top Scholar Awards Banquet held at the Asheville Renaissance. Former Owen High grad ('97) Matt Lutz provided our scholars such relevant and influential words of wisdom for their life pursuits ahead. What a wonderful role model – A BCS graduate with a successful acting career, and he's the current artistic director for the Black Mountain Center for the Arts.

  • Governor Roy Cooper visited T.C. Roberson High and presented his comprehensive safe school proposal that touted the importance of school nurses, counselors, school resource officers, and enhancements to facilities relative to safety and security. We certainly applaud his proposal and especially his reference to mental health support. Three days later, Nesbitt Discovery Academy hosted State Superintendent Mark Johnson on a campus tour and follow-up discussion. We certainly believe his vision for innovation and personalized learning was evident in the instructional technology and STEM education applied within our classrooms. We definitely appreciated his visit!

  • Congratulations to the NBHS Pro Start Culinary Team that went to Rhode Island for national competition and came away with a second-place trophy competing with teams from 46 other states! My intent is to invite them to our next board session along with Amy White, their sponsor and family consumer science teacher extraordinaire, so we can properly recognize them!

Kindergarten Enrollment Finally, I am pleased to report that Kindergarten registration is off to a successful start for the 2018-19 school year! We offered, for the first time, an online version of registration that has so far been a hit with over 1,000 users of the option!
