A small, hand-written sign at Glen Arden Elementary School reads, “Walk in a kindergartener… walk out a LEADER!”
The truth of this statement was evident at the school’s annual Leadership Day held on May 2, when parents and community members visited classrooms to enjoy student-led activities centered around the practical life lessons students are learning each day.
Glen Arden is one of nine BCS Leader in Me schools that integrates the “7 Habits of Happy Kids,” as described by author Sean Covey. The Leader in Me is a hands-on program helps young students learn skills of leadership and maturity that will serve them now and into the future. During Leadership Day, students guided their guests through various projects and displays relating to the seven habits, as well as performed songs and speeches related to their classwork. There were plenty of smiles and laughs, as well as a focus on important bits of life wisdom (that even us grown-ups need to know)!
The 7 Habits of Happy Kids are as follows:
1) Be Proactive
2) Begin with the End in Mind
3) Put First Things First
4) Think Win-Win
5) Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood
6) Syngergize
7) Sharpen the Saw
