On a brisk but sunny Saturday morning, families from across the county gathered at the Thomas Wolfe Auditorium in downtown Asheville to celebrate their graduates.

BCS awarded diplomas to 170 students from the six traditional high schools, Community High School, and Buncombe County Middle College during the 13th annual mid-year graduation. Graduates cheered each other on as they walked across the stage.

“I was nervous to walk up there in front of everybody, but when you get up there it’s just you,” said Kinia Hardin, who graduated from Buncombe County Middle College and plans to become a trauma nurse. “It felt good.”

“I’m really happy,” said Sam Farmer, who graduated from Community High School. He’s the first man in his family to graduate high school.

“It was a struggle, but the staff at Community was so good to me,” he said. “I’m going to college to be a science teacher.”

As the newly-minted graduates moved their tassels to the left side, some threw their caps into the air to the cheering crowd. Then they headed home, prepared for their tomorrow.
