Some of the worlds biggest names in women’s tennis will be competing in Asheville next week, and two essay-winning BCS elementary schools will take part in the festivities, meeting the captain of Team USA before the big showdown. Starting on Saturday, February 10, the Fed Cup brings stars Serena and Venus Williams, Lauren Davis, and team captain Kathy Rinaldi to Asheville’s U.S. Cellular Center as Team USA defends its title against the Netherlands. Next week’s tournament follows Team USA’s previous title win in Minsk against Belarus, the 18th Fed Cup title for the U.S., and the first Fed Cup title since 2000.

The Fed Cup is often called “the world cup of tennis.” Leading up Saturday’s competition, a Fed Cup Carnival is planned on February 7 for select fourth graders, teaching them about about the sport of tennis, the Netherlands, a healthy lifestyle, and highlighting the many contributions of women in athletics. Students competed to attend the Carnival through an essay contest, writing about the History of Fed Cup, Great Women of Tennis, or the Netherlands. Essays were then judged by a panel of tennis professionals and educators.

Oakley Elementary’s fourth graders proudly took first place in the contest, and Avery’s Creek Elementary placed second, earning students an invitation to the Carnival and a tennis equipment prize pack from the U.S. Tennis Association (USTA). Fairview Elementary placed third, and Pisgah Elementary placed fourth, and these students also received the prize pack from USTA.

“We are extremely proud of all of our students who worked hard on their essays,” said Mr. David Ball, District Athletic Specialist for Buncombe County Schools. “Congratulations to these schools who will represent us at the Fed Cup Carnival during this historic week in Asheville!”

The carnival and essay contest were organized by the Asheville Sports Commission, Asheville Tennis Association, Buncombe County Schools, Fed Cup LOC, U.S. Cellular Center, and the USTA. Food and snacks at the event will be provided by Ingles.
