Superintendent's Comments

Dr. Tony Baldwin commented on a variety of topics concerning Buncombe County Schools and its students, faculty, staff, and the communities served by the system. These remarks included:

Celebrating Digital Learning On October 24, 2017, we held our annual District Wide Advisory Council Meeting at Enka High School. Thanks to Mrs. Tonya Robinson and her staff for hosting the event. We had over 220 attendees, and the theme was Digital Learning Connections in Buncombe County Schools. Barry Pace and Robert Frisby are to be congratulated for facilitating a very successful program.

The Countdown is On! I want to recognize Jennifer Reed, our Director of Elementary and Intermediate Education, and efforts that made our Countdown to Kindergarten event so successful. Thanks, once again, to the Asheville Outlets for hosting our schools this past Tuesday.

All County Honors Chorus I also want to commend our staff and the 137 student performers who participated in the All County High School Honors Chorus at First Baptist Church. Kudos to Robert Waller, our Cultural Arts AIG Specialist, for his leadership in our programs and activities across the county. Meredith Waller, Robert’s daughter, was one of the outstanding soloists, and I know Mrs. Churchill was proud of her daughter Maddie’s performance as well.

Principal of the Year Congratulations to Mr. Leland Blankenship for being voted by his peers as the 2017-18 BCS Principal of the Year. Leland is serving in his fifth year as principal of Enka Middle School and will move on into competition at the regional level. First Citizens Bank and our Buncombe County Schools Foundation have been key sponsors over a number of years for our awardees.

Powerful Presentations Finally, I want to commend the efforts of several district-wide leaders for their presentations to our board this afternoon. Associate Superintendent Susanne Swanger presented information regarding the process to be used by our low performing schools in reporting their progress throughout the year as well as the staffing impact of the upcoming K-3 class size legislation set to go into effect in 18-19. Thanks to Joe Hough, our assistant superintendent for Auxiliary Services, and Cynthia Lopez, Human Resource Director, for respectively addressing the facility impact of the legislation and the mandated change in Teacher Contracts that must be in place for next year.
