Eclipse Parties at 3 BCS Schools
BCS Eclipse Parties
Posted on 08/21/2017
One of the most anticipated celestial events in decades happened here in western North Carolina on Monday, offering families a chance to get away from the crowds.

Three BCS high schools – North Buncombe, Owen, and Roberson – offered family-friendly activities and safe viewing glasses with a view from their football fields.

Children made UV bead bracelets that changed color in the sun, created pinhole viewers that cast a shadow of the sun on the ground, and drew their own versions of the eclipse with chalk and construction paper. BCS also distributed glasses at the downtown Asheville celebration at Pack Square Park.

“The idea is that families can come and enjoy their afternoon in a safe place to view the eclipse,” said Brian Maccarelli, K-12 science specialist for BCS, prior to the event. “It’s going to be a great event!”

The viewing parties began a noon and lasted until 3 p.m. The moon eclipsed 99 percent of the sun at 2:37 p.m. on Monday.
