Superintendent's Comments
Dr. Tony Baldwin commented on a variety of topics concerning Buncombe County Schools and its students, faculty, staff, and the communities served by the system. These remarks included:

A New Year is Here! The new school year is just around the corner- The first day for students is Monday, August 28! The week prior to that first student day, all newly hired teachers and staff members will attend an orientation on Tuesday, August 22. It will be held at the Nesbitt Discovery Academy. Lunch is set for 12:00 and will be sponsored by our local BCAE. The board is invited as we welcome our new staff!

Important Partnerships Tools for Schools is coming upon its 9th consecutive year of providing much-needed supplies to our students and their families. This year, the collection will be held at a new location at the Ingles on Brevard Rd. in front of the Asheville Outlet Mall on Wednesday, August the 9. Eblen Charities will once again partner with Ingles, WLOS, ACT, and iHEART Radio. Backpacks, pencils, paper, notebooks, and other school supplies will be collected and distributed the following week at the Eblen storehouse at the Westgate Plaza. We just can’t thank Eblen and these partner organizations enough for their dedicated efforts in helping so many of our families.

Filling Up Fast I have an update on the Williams-Baldwin Teacher Campus. As of today, we have only three available apartments and, by the end of the month, anticipate a waiting list of teachers for future vacancies. A huge thanks to Eblen Charities, especially Dewey Andrew and Bill Murdock, along with the State Employee’s Credit Union for investing in this endeavor to create housing that is affordable for our teachers especially those coming into the profession. We will be inviting you, the Board, to an upcoming cookout at the campus to officially welcome the teacher tenants from both the Asheville City and Buncombe County schools.

Experience History The last time a Solar Eclipse was viewable in the contiguous US was 1979. On August 21, a Solar Eclipse will be visible in our part of the country. Brian Maccarelli, District Science Curriculum Specialist, will be coordinating with the Asheville Science Museum special viewings for children, ages five and up and their families. The programs will be held from 12:00 to 5:00 at North Buncombe High School, Owen High School, and T.C. Roberson High School.

Graduation Success Unofficially, our four-year graduation rate for this past school year represented the highest percentage our district has recorded! Without question, one of the key reasons for this steady improvement lies with our Graduation Initiative Program under the direction of Kay Lamb and her team. One of the important components of the initiative is our summer Mini-mester. Over 250 students took advantage of the session to obtain make-up course credit. Over 120 more students took North Carolina Virtual Public School courses. The summer session also allowed about 150 students to complete graduation requirements and walk at a ceremony last night at Enka HS!

Professional Development Finally, the BCS Summer STEAM Conference – Connections 3.0 will be held at North Buncombe High School on August 9 th and 10th – this year we will be rolling out 1:1 devices for our 10 th, 11 th and 12 th graders. A big thanks to Barry Pace, Robert Frisby and the instructional technology team for all of their hard work. The conference will be all about digital learning competencies and networking with peers. Over 500 teachers and staff are registered to attend!
