Superintendent's Comments

Dr. Tony Baldwin commented on a variety of topics concerning Buncombe County Schools and its students, faculty, staff, and communities served by the system. These remarks included:

    • 1. Reaccreditation Complete
    • I want to begin by thanking our Central Office Leadership and the school-based principals and their staff for all the planning and hard work that was put in place to prepare for the AdvancEd accreditation. We were extremely pleased with the report presented to the board from the external visiting team last Wednesday. You’ve hit a home run when the external analysis by AdvancEd clearly matches the internal review’s findings by the school district. In other words, how we saw ourselves in terms of strengths- as well as areas of growth- was fully supported by what the visiting experts observed in our schools.

    • 2. Fine Arts Featured
    • Thanks to Robert Waller and his leadership in the Arts as Erwin High School recently hosted the 2017 Middle and High School All County Strings Concert. 53 High School and 62 Middle School students performed and did an outstanding job! Also in the arts: The North Buncombe High Blackhawk Band recently traveled to Washington D.C. as one of only 8 invited high schools for the President’s Cup National High School Band Festival and took 2nd place! The TC Roberson High Chorus competed in Orlando, Florida against programs from multiple states and brought back six 1st place awards!

    • 4. Future Focused
    • Also, thanks to Christy Cheek for coordinating another successful Students@Work week. We had over 850 middle school students visiting 25 local businesses and organizations to see first-hand potential career opportunities. I would like to note that Ms. Cheek just received the State CTE Administrator of the Year Award from the Family Career Communityπ Leaders of America!

    • 5. Odyssey of the Mind
    • I don’t want to forget our elementary schools! Congratulations to West Buncombe Elementary school for their second in a row championship in the Odyssey of the Mind completion! Their team will be going to Michigan to compete in the World Championship!

    • 6.  One Student at a Time
    • I want to wish everyone a wonderful Spring Break week ahead! I want to share this one minute video our award-winning Communications team put together to kick-off the presentation to our visiting Accreditation team.
