Buncombe County Schools
Board Briefing

Superintendent's Comments

Dr. Tony Baldwin commented on a variety of topics concerning Buncombe County Schools and its students, faculty, staff, and the communities served by the system. These remarks included:

    • 1. Buncombe County JROTC Joint Military Ball This past Saturday, at the WNC Ag Center, over 400 student cadets representing a dozen area high schools attended the 6th annual ceremony. By the way, the program was organized entirely by cadet leaders from the various JROTC units!
    • 2. Making Beautiful Music The Elementary/Intermediate and Middle School All County Choral concert was held last week at First Baptist Church Asheville. All 31 of our elementary, intermediate, and middle schools were represented.
    • 4. Exclusive Music Workshop I want to mention an excellent opportunity for BCS strings students that will take place later this month. The Asheville Symphony is fortunate to be one of two orchestras in the U.S. to receive the Midori Foundation education grant. Midori is one of the most admired violinists of her generation. She will spend a week in Asheville during the 2017 Amadeus festival and facilitate clinics for all of our strings teachers and students. She’ll also perform alongside 51 BCS students in all three youth orchestras at Thomas Wolfe. Details about this concert, as well as a coupon code for tickets, can be found on the Buncombe County Schools homepage, under Top Stories.
    • 5. AdvancED Preparation This afternoon, in a work session to the Board, the Curriculum and Instruction Staff presented the final two standards which were key components of the AdvancEd Accreditation process. Congratulations to the planning teams at both the central office and individual schools for all of their hard work!
    • 6. LED Lighting Upgrades Tonight, the Board will discuss a significant district-wide project to replace current lighting fixtures with LED upgrades. Over the past few years, our Maintenance Department has focused considerable efforts on energy saving and sustainability projects on our 42 campuses.
