Superintendent's Comments

Dr. Tony Baldwin commented on a variety of topics concerning Buncombe County Schools and its students, faculty, staff, and the communities served by the system. These remarks included:

  • 1. Blue Ribbon Awards I want to begin by congratulating our Communications Department, namely Stacia Harris and Ben Rickert for the recent awards that were received from the North Carolina School Public Relations Association. On January 27, 2017, the team was honored with 11 Blue Ribbon Awards- 6 Gold, 4 Silver and 1 Bronze. The majority of the awards recognize excellence in electronic media and video production. On a platinum level of recognition, we received a Best of the Best Award for our Summer and Fall billboard campaigns – only nine of these were given throughout the state.

    2. Mid-Year Graduation I want to remind everyone that we will be holding Mid-Year Graduation at the Thomas Wolfe Auditorium this Saturday, February 4, 2017, beginning at 11:00 AM. I believe that the opportunity for these seniors to graduate at mid-year allows them to immediately jump into their post-secondary college and career options or perhaps continue into a transition plan for the remainder of the year.

    3. Celebrating the Arts Also on your calendars should be two additional events in February. First, Friday the 24th we will be holding our Elementary, Intermediate, and Middle School All County Chorus concert at the First Baptist Church downtown. The next evening, Saturday the 25th, the Joint JROTC Ball will happen at the Western N.C. AG Center beginning at 6:00 PM.

    4. Winter Weather Impact Finally, I want to announce to our Buncombe County Schools’ Community that with the third day of the school year lost due to winter weather earlier this week we will be converting Friday, March the 10, 2017, to a regular student attendance day. With the loss of our calendar waiver this year, decisions regarding make-up days will definitely be more challenging.
